Mendocino Coast Local History Contest (sponsored by Mendocino Business Association and Kelley House Museum)
- Open to 3rd through 8th grade students in Mendocino Unified School District.
- Turn in projects to your classroom teacher or to Deena Zarlin at Mendocino Grammar School Room 12. All projects should be labeled with student’s name, grade and teacher.
- Deadline is May 1, 2006.
Local History Contest Guidelines
- Art Work no larger than 12”x 18”.
- Essays 150-2000 words.
- Original stories or research done by the student may be submitted. (Please don’t include a lot of photocopied material).
- You may submit a group project or an individual project.
- A stand up project display board may be acceptable if it is necessary to share the project
Some possible project ideas:
- Create a drawing or painting of a historic scene or building (with an accompanying explanation of the historical significance).
- Interview with an old-timer or community leader.
- Research the history of your house or property.
- Your family’s history in the area.
- Research the history of a town building, street, business, commune, organization.
- Research an environmental issue and its effects locally.
- Investigate an industry such as logging, fishing, urchins, sheep, farming, grapes, apples, arts, or tourism.
- Anything else you can think of related to the history (past or recent) of the Mendocino Coast!
Prizes and Recognition
This contest offers a total of several hundred dollars worth of prizes in cash or gift certificates.
Prizes will be awarded for each grade level. A grand prize may also be given.
Entries will be displayed at the Mendocino Art Center during Mendocino Heritage Days in early May.
The winner will be announced at a special ceremony.
